According to the expert, "high temperatures can cause hyperthermia, heat stroke and in more severe cases respiratory distress, especially in brachycephalic dogs". "In the case of sudden cold accompanied by rain, it can affect the immune system and predispose to the appearance of respiratory diseases."

In addition, "in situations of storms, thunderstorms and/or lightning, the most sensitive animals can become fearful or anxious and, in epileptic animals, seizures may even occur," she warns.

As for the symptoms, the veterinarian emphasizes that "any behavioral change should be valued, from milder symptoms, such as tremors, changes in sleep patterns or lack of activity, to more severe ones, such as lack of appetite, respiratory changes (panting) and apathy". What to do?
In the case of cold, "we must provide warm beds, blankets and a sheltered place. In animals that live indoors, a gradual adaptation to the external climate should be made before the walks. These should be shorter and preferably with some warm clothing," she advises.
If it is a change to extreme heat, the animals should "always have fresh water available" and, if they are outdoors, "a shade to protect themselves". "Walks should only be done during the coolest hours, avoiding strenuous physical exercise. We must also remember the importance of using sunscreen on the most exposed areas of the skin", says Joana Gomes. "There are cooling mats and toys on the market that can help control their body temperature," she adds.
