Childhood obesity may be linked to iron deficiency, according to a study published in the British Journal of Medicine this April. The research was carried out by scientists at the University of Leeds and the School of Food Science and Nutrition in England.

Several studies involving children and adolescents under 25 years old from 44 countries were analysed. The records included data on iron levels, vitamin levels, minerals and weight.

They found that iron deficiency was associated with people who were underweight, but also with those who were overweight. They suggest that malnutrition may be affecting younger people.

"The relationship between undernutrition and micronutrients critical for child growth and development is well established, but little is known about the risk of iron, vitamin A, and zinc deficiencies in overweight or obese children and adolescents, making this a hidden form of malnutrition," says Xiaomian Tan, one of the study's authors.

"This study is extremely important given the high prevalence of childhood obesity. We hope it will lead to greater recognition of the problem by healthcare professionals and improvements in clinical practice and care," he continues.
