Lifestyle Hipotiroidismo

If you feel constantly cold and are gaining weight, be suspicious. These may be signs of hypothyroidism, the most common functional thyroid disease and which is characterized by  a deficient hormonal production.

The thyroid is a small endocrine gland about five centimeters in diameter, located on the front of the neck, below the Adam's apple, which, despite being discreet, has an essential function for the human body: it regulates the production of energy, heat, heartbeats and even the proper functioning of the intestine. On the other hand, complications in its functioning can be the origin of many inexplicable symptoms, but with serious consequences for health.

"Symptoms tend to develop slowly and it may take several years to realize that you have a problem," says the British National Health Service, quoted by the Daily Express. He also adds that "many symptoms of hypothyroidism are the same as those of other conditions, so they can be easily confused".

A study by the University of Aberdeen, in the United Kingdom, involving 1200 people and published in 2023, revealed that thyroid problems take about four and a half years to be diagnosed.

Here, the CUF health network corroborates, stating that "the clinical manifestation is gradual and nonspecific, so the diagnosis is often late". The symptoms "are varied and include fatigue, dry skin, hair loss and brittle hair, slight weight gain, puffy face, intolerance to cold, irritability, forgetfulness, depression, menstrual irregularities and even infertility".
