Blinking does much more than just moisten your eyes. A group of researchers from Columbia University in the United States suggests that it improves vision and increases the retina's power of stimulation, according to a study published in PNAS.
"Blinking is not simply a mechanism to refresh the tear film, but acts as an information-processing stage. By modulating visual input to the retina, blinks reformat spatial information into the temporal domain, generating signals that emphasize low-resolution information about the global structure of the visual scene", the study reads.

Until now, it was believed that blinking could interrupt the activity of neurons that respond to visual stimuli and not in a positive way. However, this study contradicts that idea. "Contrary to common assumption, blinks facilitate—rather than disrupt—visual processing", the study authors say.
They also state that this "perceptual enhancement occurs independently of the motor signals associated with blinks".
