A 14-year-old boy died Tuesday afternoon, April 30, after being attacked with a sword near a London Underground station in Hainault, northeast London, UK. A 36-year-old man has been arrested. The incident has been described as "horrific" and "heartbreaking" by leading UK politicians. Emergency services were called to the scene at around 7am this morning (local time) after a man reportedly drove a van into a house on Thurlow Gardens. The London Ambulance Service said five people were taken to hospital with injuries. In a press conference, Detective Chief Inspector Stuart Bell said the boy died at the scene from his injuries. "It is with the deepest regret that I have to confirm that one of the injured, a 13-year-old boy, has died from his injuries. He was taken to hospital but sadly died a short while later," he said, adding that the young victim's family are now being supported by specialist officers.

In an update at 2.45pm (Lisbon time), police said that "after speaking to the family" they had confirmed the boy was "14 years old and not 13" as previously reported.

Four injured remain in hospital (but are not life-threatening)

The boy was one of five people stabbed in the attack, which also injured two other members of the public and two police officers - who have not been named. The latter suffered "serious injuries" and will require surgery.

However, none of the victims are believed to be in a life-threatening condition.

Suspect arrested after being tasered

Police also confirmed that a 36-year-old man - who is in police custody - was detained after being tasered.

The suspect was "subject to a Taser at the scene and detained 22 minutes after the first call to police, shortly before 7am this morning," the officer said, confirming that there is no ongoing threat and no other suspects.

The incident is not being treated as a "targeted attack", nor as an "act of terrorism".

Forensic officers were at the scene this afternoon gathering evidence, Sky News reported. The area has been cordoned off by police.

The Metropolitan Police said it is working to establish "all of the facts as a priority" in this "horrific" incident to understand what caused the attack.

"I know that the families of those involved, the local community and the wider community and indeed many people across London will want to know why this terrible incident happened. It is our job to find out - and we will. That is what we owe them," the detective chief inspector said.

"Horrific, heartbreaking, shocking": Reaction to the attack

Several UK politicians have expressed their shock at the attack this morning.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak described the incident as "shocking" and thanked the emergency services and police for their "bravery" at the scene.

"Violence has no place in our society," he said.

Home Secretary James Cleverly said his "thoughts are with all of those affected" by the attack.

"It is heartbreaking to hear that the 13-year-old victim [since corrected to 14] of this morning’s appalling attack in Ilford has died. I send my heartfelt condolences to the family," Cleverly added.
