Foreign ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin told a press conference that the case had been investigated by the Chinese Anti-Doping Agency "thoroughly, completely and in detail".

The cases were brought to light recently by media outlets in the US, Germany and Australia, which accused the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) of accepting the Chinese Anti-Doping Agency's version of events, which blamed the positive tests on accidental contamination.

The athletes, including six medallists at the Tokyo 2020 Games, tested positive for the banned substance trimetazidine (TMZ), a drug used to treat angina.

WADA said it was made aware of the cases in 2021 and of China's decision to let them off without punishment.

Wang said the positive tests were due to "unintentional ingestion of contaminated food", exonerating the athletes of any blame or negligence.

The spokesperson stressed that the Chinese government maintains a "zero-tolerance" policy towards doping, "strictly abides by" the World Anti-Doping Code and "actively contributes to the unified global fight" against the practice, while reiterating China's commitment to "protecting the physical and mental health of athletes" and promoting "fair competition" in sports.

Experts quoted by the state-run Global Times newspaper accused the media outlets and international organisations of "smearing Chinese athletes" and "attempting to stifle Chinese sports, especially with the 2024 Paris Olympics approaching".

The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) announced last week that it "reserves the right to take legal action" against those spreading "misleading news" about its alleged leniency in such cases.

The International Testing Agency (ITA), which is responsible for global testing, also looked into the cases in 2022, as did the US Anti-Doping Agency in 2023.
