The chairman of the Estoril SAD, Ignacio Beristain, today regretted the clashes between supporters of Chaves and the "canarinhos" players in the match of the 30th round of the I Football League, stating that he does not accept the "advantage" given to Desportivo de Chaves.

"Unfortunately, we are not here to talk about a football match. Unfortunately, [we make this statement] because of what happened at the end of the match, [when] fans invaded the pitch and attacked our players on the field," Ignacio Beristain began by saying, in a statement made to journalists after the duel between Desportivo de Chaves and Estoril Praia (2-2).

The match, corresponding to the 30th round of the main tier of national football, was marked by a pitch invasion and aggression between fans from Trás-os-Montes and players from the 'equipa da linha' during the injury time.

After several minutes of stoppage time and two dismissals, with Estoril players Marcelo Carné and Pedro Álvaro being shown a straight red card, the match resumed, despite the visitors having asked the refereeing team to suspend the match.

"Our players, while defending themselves from the aggression, were sent off by the referee. Everyone who was here saw that there were no conditions to [continue] the match, the regular time had already been completed, there were Estoril Praia players who were attacked on the pitch, so we asked the referee to suspend the match, but, as you saw, it was decided to continue in a [context] in which it was not possible to play football and, those who were attacked, suffered the loss," said the 'canarinho' official.

For all these reasons, Ignacio Beristain reiterated that he could not accept the decision of referee Nuno Almeida, stating that Desportivo de Chaves benefited from this situation.

"Today, those who attacked in Chaves gained an advantage. We are people of sport, we always, always accept the results, we know how to win and we know how to lose. Today, I cannot ask the fans, the players [to accept], Estoril Praia cannot accept what happened," he concluded.

According to a source from the Public Security Police (PSP) of Chaves, six fans were arrested following the clashes.
