Portuguese athlete Pedro Pichardo won today the triple jump competition of the 'meeting' of Xiamen, in China, of the Diamond League, with Tiago Pereira in seventh place, and Liliana Cá in the same position in the discus throw.

The Olympic champion Pichardo began the triple jump competition with a jump of 17.38 meters, immediately guaranteeing the minimum for the Paris2024 Olympic Games, and in the last jump, he improved, reaching 17.51.

Tiago Pereira achieved his best mark today at 16.41 meters, in the third jump, well below the 17.22 requirement to participate in the next Games.

In turn, in the discus throw, Liliana Cá also finished in seventh place with a throw of 63.27 meters, on the second attempt, insufficient for the Olympic minimum (64.50).

Thus, Pichardo is the only athlete who competed today to join the Portuguese mission for Paris2024, which now has 41 athletes.

The 30-year-old Benfica athlete, born in Santiago de Cuba, will be able to defend in the French capital the title won three years ago, in the Tokyo2020 edition, when he 'jumped' 17.98, a mark that is still the record for Portugal.

Representing the Portuguese national team, Pichardo was also World and European champion in 2022, twice European indoor champion in 2021 and 2023, and indoor world runner-up in 2022.

Pedro Pablo Pichardo, who represented Cuba until 2015, has a personal best in the triple jump of 18.08 meters, achieved on May 28, 2015, in Havana.
