"I made the decision little by little. Each day that passed, I felt better and without missing the circuit", Muguruza said in a press conference on the sidelines of the Laureus Awards, which will be presented on Monday in Madrid, and of which she is an ambassador.

In her career, the Spanish woman reached the top of the hierarchy in September 2017 and won 10 titles, including two Grand Slams, at Roland Garros (2016) and Wimbledon (2017), and the victory at the WTA Finals (2021).

Muguruza had not competed since her defeat by the Czech Linda Noskova, 6-1 and 6-4, in the first round of Lyon, France, on 30 January 2023, and achieved her last triumph on 21 September 2022, against the Greek Despina Papamichail (6-4 and 6-2), in the round of 16 of the Tokyo tournament.

"The time has come to say goodbye. It has been a long career, very good and full of great moments, but the time has come for a new chapter, a new era. I am 30 years old and I feel young", said the Spanish woman.

Muguruza also said she wanted to "make up for lost time and do ordinary things", adding that her plans include "starting a family, getting married and having a dog".
