In front of their fans, Bayer Leverkusen celebrated their first German League with a 5-0 triumph over Werder Bremen, reaching the end of the 29th round, and with five still to play, with a 16-point lead over Bayern Munich and Stuttgart.

The Bavarians had won the last 11 Bundesligas, a dominance now broken by the 'pharmacists', led by a still young Xabi Alonso, who, at 42, wins his first title as a coach, seven years after having ended a celebrated career, precisely at Bayern Munich.

The bet of the Leverkusen team last season, which was to hire Alonso from Real Sociedad's B team, was surprising, but now ends up being rewarded with the unprecedented title, to which he can still add the Europa League and the German Cup.

This bet will continue for the next season, since the Basque coach has already guaranteed his continuity, despite being one of the most sought-after coaches in Europe, with his name having been associated, among others, with Bayern Munich and Liverpool.

In 29 German League matches, Bayer allowed only four draws, in a season in which it showed a great desire, which earned it many victories in the final moments of the matches -- it also has only one draw in nine games in the Europa League and five victories in the German Cup.

The title was practically decided on the 21st round, when Leverkusen, which is in the Bundesliga for the 45th time, 'bent' Bayern Munich to a 3-0 defeat.

Before reaching its first title, Bayer Leverkusen had managed to finish on the podium on 11 occasions, with five second places, one of which was in 1999/2000, the year in which it lost the championship on the last round, when it was defeated at Unterhaching's home, being overtaken by Bayern, which finished with the same number of points.

Without the great stars of the Bavarians' squad, Leverkusen based its 'eleven' on some more experienced players, such as the ex-Benfica player Alejandro Grimaldo, who scored 11 goals and three assists during the season, the defenders Jonathan Tah or the midfielder Granit Xhaka.

Also noteworthy is the most prolific season of the still young Florian Wirtz, who, at just 20 years old, is already in his third season in the 'pharmacists' main team, in which he scored 17 goals in the various competitions.

Also still young, both 23 years old, the winger Jeremie Frimpong, with 12 goals, and the forward Victor Boniface, the team's top scorer, with 18 goals in all competitions, were other figures in Xabi Alonso's team.

This is Bayer Leverkusen's third major title, after winning the 1987/88 UEFA Cup and the 1992/93 German Cup, with the highlight being the presence in the 2001/02 Champions League final, lost to Real Madrid.
