Patrice Motsepe was in Bissau today for a few hours, having been received successively by the president of the Guinea-Bissau Football Federation (FFGB), Carlos Teixeira, by the Minister of Sports, Augusto Gomes, and by the Head of State, Umaro Sissoco Embalo.

"I expressed to the President (of the Republic) my gratitude for the excellent work and for the support of the authorities to the football federation" of Guinea-Bissau, said Motsepe after the audience with Sissoco Embalo.

The African sports leader, who visited Bissau from Equatorial Guinea, told reporters that he conveyed to the Guinean president "CAF's confidence" in the work that has been carried out by "brother Carlos Teixeira and his staff in the federation".

Motsepe noted that CAF "appreciated the partnership" between the federation and the Government in improving the conditions of the 24 de Setembro Stadium, which was banned by FIFA between August 2021 and March 2023, in order to host international matches.

Guinea-Bissau's main football stadium, built by China in 1989, was banned from official CAF and FIFA matches due to lack of conditions in the locker rooms, poor turf, weak artificial lighting and absence of chairs in one of the stands.

Currently, the venue has been provisionally authorised to host international matches, a situation that the CAF president hopes will be overcome in the near future, taking into account the efforts of the FFGB and the Government in this regard, he said.

In addition to the definitive lifting of the ban on the 24 de Setembro Stadium, the CAF president also hopes that the Guinean teams will be able to return to African football competitions.

For more than 10 years, Guinean teams have stopped taking part in club competitions at the African continental level, due to economic difficulties.

Patrice Motsepe, who was travelling from Bissau to Cape Verde and then to Angola, also announced CAF's willingness to work with Guinea-Bissau in the development of youth and women's football.
