The World Athletics federation made history on Wednesday by announcing that it will become the first track and field discipline to award prize money at the Olympic Games, starting in Paris next summer.

As such, athletes who win gold in each of the 48 individual events will be rewarded with $50,000 (€46,000), while in the relay events, that amount will be split equally between all those involved.

However, the body did not stop there, also revealing that it will begin to award prize money to athletes who finish with silver and bronze medals from the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles onwards.

"The introduction of prize money for Olympic medallists in our sport is a defining moment for World Athletics and for our athletes, reinforcing our commitment to athlete empowerment," said president Sebastien Coe.

"While it is impossible to put a monetary value on the achievement of an Olympic medal or the commitment and focus required to even represent your country at the Olympic Games, I believe it is important that we start somewhere," he added.
