Manchester United booked their place in the FA Cup final on Sunday but were made to work incredibly hard for their victory over Coventry City. The Red Devils threw away a three-goal lead but won on penalties.

In a match that pitted a team struggling in the Premier League against one in the top flight of the Championship, the English second tier, the half-time scoreline suggested the Red Devils were cruising to a comfortable win at Wembley. But it was not to be.

McTominay opened the scoring in the 23rd minute with a close-range finish from a Diogo Dalot cross, before Harry Maguire headed home a Bruno Fernandes corner just before the break (45+1').

Bruno Fernandes got on the scoresheet himself early in the second half, turning home in the 58th minute. If Manchester United were expected to see out the game from there, Coventry City had other ideas.

In an incredible finale, the Championship side pulled a goal back through Simms in the 71st minute, set up by Portuguese Fábio Tavares. O'Hare made it 3-2 in the 79th minute, before Onana produced a stunning save to deny Viktor Torp a leveller in the 85th minute.

And incredibly, there was more to come. In stoppage time, Coventry equalised. Haji Wright converted from the spot to make it 3-3 in the 90+5th minute.

Extra-time followed, with Thorpe putting Coventry ahead only for the goal to be ruled out for offside. Penalties were required to separate the sides.

Coventry missed two spot-kicks, one saved by Onana, as Manchester United progressed. The Red Devils are into the final and will face rivals Manchester City in a repeat of last season's showpiece.

Preview

After Manchester City booked their place in the FA Cup final on Saturday afternoon, it is the turn of Coventry and Manchester United to battle it out for the second spot on Sunday.

The Red Devils, with Portuguese players Bruno Fernandes and Diogo Dalot starting, are heavy favourites to progress, not least because they are facing a team from the second tier, but as we know in English football, anything can happen.
