A norovirus outbreak has infected more than 800 people at a spring festival in Stuttgart, southwest Germany, over the past weekend.
Visitors quickly complained of vomiting, nausea and diarrhoea, the BBC reports.
It is still unknown how the virus was spread, however, the number of infections has been rising throughout the week, reaching 815 on Friday.
Stuttgart's health authorities believe the virus is not linked to food or drinks served at the Göckelesmaier tent, as samples taken have all come back negative. Nevertheless, the venue has been thoroughly disinfected and has since reopened.
The city's health department therefore believes the virus was transmitted from person to person, possibly through the air.
The spring festival, on the banks of the Neckar river, began last Saturday and runs for 23 days until May, featuring rides, food and craft stalls.
According to the UK's National Health Service, norovirus is a highly infectious and resilient bug that causes a range of gastrointestinal symptoms including nausea, diarrhoea and vomiting. The illness can also cause a high temperature, headaches and aching limbs.
