Nearly 50 cats were rescued from a car in Minnesota, USA, in June 2022. Now, one of them has become the face of a popular pet product brand.

Hercules is the new face of an American brand of litter boxes and has already taken part in another photoshoot - so expect to see him on more products in the coming months. But the moggy's story is an extraordinary one.

The cat was found, along with 49 others, crammed into a car on a hot summer's day. Police at the time discovered that the animals' owner had been evicted and was living in the vehicle with his feline friends.

According to the Washington Post, the owner agreed to surrender the cats to an animal shelter. However, one escaped. Volunteers searched for the cat for about a month and, eventually, Hercules turned up on the doorstep of a nearby home.

The cat was in a bad way, with a broken jaw, severe lacerations to his tongue and maggots. Hercules was taken to a veterinary clinic, where vet Nicole Perreault confirmed with his owner that this was the same animal that had escaped during the rescue a month earlier.

"He was so close to death that I questioned if the humane thing to do would be to euthanize him," she said. However, she added that she got "the sense that he really wanted to fight". Hercules was given treatment and gradually improved.

Once he was well enough, Hercules was adopted by a nurse. "He's just so special," said his new owner, Jill LeBrun. Last year, she saw an advert from a talent agency looking for animals with unusual faces. As Hercules has a slightly crooked jaw due to his injuries, she decided to apply.

The cat was an instant hit and, a few months later, Jill was in the supermarket when she was amazed to see her cat's face on a litter box. "He's a natural and he loves the attention. I feel very lucky that I'm the one who gets to share my life with him," she said.
