Israeli opposition leader urges Netanyahu to resign

Israeli opposition leader Yair Lapid called on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu today to follow the example of the military’s intelligence chief, Aharon Haliva, and resign over failures that led to the Hamas attack on October 7.

"With great power comes great responsibility," Lapid wrote on his personal Twitter account, deeming Haliva's decision to quit his military post as "honourable", since he considers himself responsible for the military inaction that failed to prevent the Islamist organisation's massacre that killed 1,200 people on Israeli soil and allowed for the kidnapping of around 250 people.

"It would have been appropriate for Prime Minister Netanyahu to do the same," Lapid added.

Along the same lines, Vladimir Beliak, another deputy from Lapid's Yesh Atid party, called for the Israeli leader to resign "immediately", regardless of the creation of a state commission of inquiry to identify those responsible for the management of the "tragedy" of 7 October.

For the time being, the only inquiry still underway is the one that the army opened internally at the end of February, the conclusions of which should be presented to the Israeli Chief of Staff, Herzi Halevi, in early June.

Haliva is the first senior official to resign half a year after the Hamas attacks, which are still holding 133 hostages in the Gaza Strip.

Shortly after the attack, Haliva took the "blame" for failing to prevent the Hamas attack.

The Israeli Armed Forces reported in a statement that the Chief of Staff accepted Haliva's resignation request, thanking him for his service.

The resignation may pave the way for other top Israeli security officials to take responsibility for failing to prevent the attack and to resign.
