"Preciousness". 1 kg of ox gallstones is worth 180 thousand euros
Product is considered so valuable that it has awakened the interest of many thieves. In some cases it can even be worth more than gold.

It may seem strange, but there are those who pay thousands of euros for ox gallstones. So much so that the "preciousness", as described by the Brazilian website G1, is sold, mainly in the Asian market, for 180 thousand euros per kg.
Brazil is one of the largest producers in the world. These "super special" stones are generated inside the gallbladders of older oxen and cows and are worth more than the finest cuts of meat. In fact, according to G1, they are worth "three times the price of gold".
For this reason, the theft of gallstones is becoming increasingly common in Brazil, especially in Barretos, a city that is considered a kind of national capital for this type of material. Here, there are regulated companies that buy this material and export it, but this does not always happen within the law.
In September 2023, for example, there was a series of robberies of gallstones in the interior of São Paulo. In just one of these thefts, the criminals took 2 million reais, about 360 thousand euros, in gallstones.
Why are ox gallstones so valuable?
Ox gallstones are used in several East Asian countries to prepare natural medicines. China is the main buyer, however, this type of product is also used in Japan and Korea.
To G1, a doctor who works in Seoul, the capital of South Korea, explained that they are mainly used for "strokes and heart disease", but also as "sedatives, for anxiety and insomnia".
The high demand generates a lack of supply. In addition to the fact that cattle are normally slaughtered young, before they have gallstones, China buys almost everything that exists on the market, which causes the prices of this type of material to skyrocket, as well as the thefts.
