Bent knee in front, straight leg behind and straight torso. In a generic way we can say that this is how 'lunges' are done. It is a very common exercise that can have several variations. Despite bringing some benefits, it can also be harmful.

The 'website' Well + Good spoke with physiotherapist Grayson Wickham and 'personal trainer' Joey Thurman to understand the disadvantages of doing this exercise regularly.

They move the body in only one direction

"A big disadvantage is that you are moving in only one direction, either forward or backward", says Grayson Wickham. 

They demand some flexibility

"They can be a challenge if you have tight hips or limited mobility in your foot", he continues.

They demand balance

"They require balance and stability since the feet are placed side by side to provide a base and support."

They can cause knee pain

"If you don't do the exercise properly, it can cause pain and injury to your knees", says Joey Thurman.
