Lifestyle Diabetes

Diabetes cases worldwide could reach 1.3 billion by 2050, more than double the number in 2021. In that year, there were 529 million people with diabetes. Type 2 diabetes accounted for 90% of the total prevalence of the disease. The data is included in a series of studies published, in the second half of 2023, by The Lancet and The Lancet Diabetes and Endocrinology, which warned of the need for effective strategies.

Speaking to the Mirror, pharmacist Graham Phillips, head of ProLongevity, warns of critical warning signs that may indicate a high risk of diabetes. "If your waist measurement is more than half your height, you could be at risk of diabetes," he began by pointing out, warning that "when insulin levels are high, the body effectively locks away fat stores, making it harder to access them". "This can lead to a situation where people are gaining more and more weight and yet, at the same time, they are feeling hungrier," he explains.

Conditions such as acanthosis, a disease characterized by dark, thick, velvety patches on the skin, can also be warning signs of underlying metabolic problems.

With over three decades of experience, Graham Phillips also highlighted symptoms of metabolic syndrome, including high blood pressure, high blood sugar, excess body fat around the waist, and alarming cholesterol levels. This condition not only increases the risk of diabetes, but also indicates a possible 10-year reduction in life expectancy.

In addition, the pharmacist said that getting angry when you're hungry can also be a sign of "rollercoaster" blood sugar levels. This sign is often a consequence of an unbalanced diet that leaves people hungry, tired, and irritable.

"Spotting these early warning signs and acting on them now could make a significant difference to holding back diabetes and increasing overall life expectancy," he concluded.
