Hugs and physical contact in general can reduce feelings of anxiety and depression. This is the conclusion of a recent study published in Nature Human Behavior. Both bring benefits to mental and physical health.
"Physical contact, emotional contact, looking into each other's eyes and being accompanied. We know that it is essential not only to improve mental health, but also physical health. The emotional and the social are connected", reveals psychologist Guillermo Fouce, one of the authors of this study, quoted here by the newspaper El Mundo.

The research analyzed a total of 212 studies with data from almost 13 thousand people. The scientists found evidence of the benefits of physical contact.
"Basically, physical contact is an expression of support, it is an expression of closeness, it means feeling accompanied. In all fragility indexes, one of the issues that is taken into account the most is the possibility of feeling accompanied, of someone accompanying, supporting. It is something fundamental."
The study showed no difference if the contact came from a family member or from another person with regard to adults. In babies, however, some differences were observed when the contact came from the parents.
