Bastian Schweinsteiger admits he "would have liked to have played more" at Manchester United.

Bastian Schweinsteiger has given an extensive interview to the latest edition of British magazine FourFourTwo in which he lamented the fact Jose Mourinho froze him out shortly after arriving at Manchester United.

The former Germany international made just four competitive appearances under the Portuguese coach in the first half of the 2016-17 season before his contract was terminated and he moved to the United States to join Chicago Fire, where he would eventually see out his career.

Now, he admits he is still unsure exactly what happened: "I don't know. Maybe it was also a decision from the board. You have to know that I had a knee injury in the season before. I said I would do my rehab in Manchester, but I had the same injury again.

"With the Euros coming up, I asked the club and Louis van Gaal if I could do my rehab in Germany. For a player, the most important thing is to be fit and to come back as quickly as possible. That was my aim, so that's why I did it – it wasn't against Manchester United."

"He [Mourinho] apologised to me later on. I shook his hand and said, 'It's OK, no problem.' I would have liked to have played more, of course – especially with Paul Pogba and Zlatan Ibrahimovic, because I think with them we could have achieved a lot more," he concluded.
