"We are very optimistic about this candidacy and our expectation is that Sérgio Gonçalves will be the next Madeiran to join the European Parliament", says Paulo Cafôfo, current president of the PS/Madeira in a note released in the region.

According to the information from the PS insular, Sérgio Gonçalves, who was a deputy in the Legislative Assembly dissolved by the President of the Republic, is "the face of the European elections occupying the 8th position on the list, an eligible place, since the Socialist Party has managed to ensure the representation of more than eight deputies to the European Parliament".

The Madeiran socialist candidate has a degree in Economics and a Master's in Management, is linked to the business sector and was leader of the PS/Madeira between 2022 and 2023, having been replaced by Paulo Cafôfo, former Secretary of State for Communities of the socialist government led by António Costa.

"The choice of Sérgio Gonçalves is a source of great satisfaction for the PS/Madeira, since he is a person with a remarkable professional career. Both in terms of professional career and in terms of politics, he is recognized for his rigor, competence and capacity for work", says the Madeiran socialist leader quoted in the document.

In turn, Sérgio Gonçalves declares that he is "a candidate with the same dedication, dedication and commitment" with which he has engaged in "all political and civic challenges".

The candidate assures that he intends to be "an active voice in defending the interests of the Region [Autonomous Region of Madeira]" in the European Parliament.

In the note released, the president of the PS/Madeira also highlights the "commitment" of the Madeiran socialist MEP who ceased her duties, Sara Cerdas, who, in the last five years in the European Parliament, stood out with a work that "will now continue in Madeira".

In the last European elections, in 2019, Madeira kept two MEPs in the European Parliament, namely Sara Cerdas (PS) and Cláudia Monteiro de Aguiar (PSD), who managed to be re-elected and is now Secretary of State for Fisheries.

In that election, the PSD was the most voted party in the Autonomous Region of Madeira in the European elections on Sunday, with 37.15% of the votes, with the PS obtaining 25.81%.

Abstention stood at 61.47%, lower than the 66.14% recorded in 2014.
