The IL president today accused the Government of making "huge propaganda" about tax changes, when "it has no real will to change", arguing that the changes in IRS punish those over 35 years old.

"In August, the PSD showed a drive to lower taxes. We said that what was at stake was very little. It's five euros per month for most people with incomes of up to 1,500 euros (...). The PSD's huge drive to lower taxes is a huge propaganda and not a real desire to change", said Rui Rocha.

In Porto, in the opening speech of the National Council, the leader of the IL who dedicated the intervention to the European elections and to anti-corruption measures, began by summarizing the first days of the AD government.

"These first few days bring worrying signs", he summarized, giving the example of taxes and income.

"The AD assumes that the IRS is no longer an income tax and has become an age tax. Those over 35 now ask: What have we done wrong to the country? This IRS punishes those over 35. It puts the burden of paying taxes on those over 35", said the president of the IL.

Rui Rocha considered that the tax reduction announced by Luís Montenegro is "insufficient and illusory because it incorporates a part that concerns an adjustment of the brackets due to inflation".

"That is not reducing taxes. That is the minimum of justice that should be imposed in these matters", he said.

For Rui Rocha, "another worrying sign" is the forecast of an increase in the average gross salary to 1,750 euros in 2023.

"What does the AD have to offer, especially to young Portuguese people? An average gross salary of 1,750 in 2030? What signal is being given to young people who are thinking of leaving the country or to those who, having already left, saw a hope of returning? It is being said that it will take us until 2030 to have a gross salary that adds little more than the expected inflation. It is staying the same", he pointed out.

This was the only moment of the IL National Council meeting open to journalists.

The meeting's agenda includes the presentation and deliberation of the candidacy for the European elections and a debate on the European Manifesto.
