The second phase of India's general election began Friday in a vote that will take place over six weeks.

Last week, the first phase of the vote saw a 66% turnout, a drop of almost four points compared to the 2019 election.

According to the Indian press, the decline is due to the heat wave that is affecting the country, with temperatures exceeding 40°C in some areas.

Current Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) are expected to win the election.

The votes will be counted on June 4, with the results expected to be announced the same day.
