"It is a hallmark of our democracy that our citizens make their views, their concerns, and their outrage known at any given time. And I think that reflects the strength of the country, the strength of the democracy," he said at a press conference in Beijing.

For that reason, Blinken said he understands that the American people have "strong and passionate feelings" about what is happening in Gaza because of the "terrible human suffering" and the deaths of children, women and men "caught in a crossfire created by Hamas."

"I have said before that this could end tomorrow, it could have ended yesterday (...) if Hamas laid down its rockets, if it stopped hiding behind civilians, if it released the hostages, if it surrendered. But it has chosen not to do that - and it is also notable that there is a deafening silence about Hamas," he added.

Blinken is visiting Beijing, where he met with Chinese President Xi Jinping to convey the "commitment of the United States to the lines of communication that exist" between the parties and to show support for the implementation of measures to improve bilateral relations.

More than 400 people have been arrested in the last nine days of pro-Palestinian protests at several universities in the United States, led by Columbia University, more than a dozen of which have been the scene of police interventions that even resulted in the arrest of teachers.

On October 7 of last year, Hamas fighters - who have been in power in the Gaza Strip since 2007 and are classified as a terrorist organization by the United States, the European Union and Israel - carried out an unprecedented attack on Israeli territory, killing 1,163 people, mostly civilians.

They also took 250 hostages, about 130 of whom remain in captivity and 34 are said to have died in the meantime, according to the latest report by the Israeli authorities.

In retaliation, Israel declared a war to "eradicate" Hamas, which today entered its 203rd day, continuing to threaten to spread to the entire Middle East region, and has so far caused 34,356 deaths in the Gaza Strip, more than 77,000 injured and thousands of missing people presumably buried in the rubble, mostly civilians, according to updated figures from local authorities.

The conflict has also caused almost two million displaced people, plunging the overcrowded and poor Palestinian enclave into a serious humanitarian crisis, with more than 1.1 million people in a "catastrophic hunger situation" that is claiming victims - "the highest number ever recorded" by the UN in food security studies in the world.
