A 20-year-old British man has been charged with plotting to set fire to London businesses with links to Ukraine after allegedly being recruited as a Russian spy.

The suspect, named as Dylan Earl from Leicestershire, is accused of conducting acts intended to benefit the Russian state against British businesses and has been charged under the Security Services Act 2023, Sky News reports.

He is alleged to have links to the notorious Wagner Group and is accused of carrying out hostile reconnaissance, researching and targeting potential targets and attempting to recruit individuals to assist a foreign intelligence service in carrying out activities in the UK, court documents allege.

The case began after a fire broke out at an industrial estate in east London on March 20.

Two other men - Paul English, 60, and Nii Mensah, 21 - have been charged with aggravated trespass. Jake Reeves, 22, has been charged with accepting a benefit from a foreign intelligence service as well as aggravated trespass.

A fifth man - Dmitrijus Paulauska, 22 - has been charged with possessing information likely to be useful to a person committing or preparing an act of terrorism as part of the same case.

All five were remanded in custody after appearing at Westminster Magistrates' Court.
