The baby who made headlines around the world after being delivered from her mother who was killed in the Gaza Strip has died. The newborn was pronounced dead on Thursday and was buried next to her mother, the BBC reports.

Sabreen al-Sakani was born by cesarean section at a hospital in Rafah shortly after midnight on Sunday, after her mother, Sabreen, father, Shukri Joudeh, and three-year-old sister, Malak, were killed in an Israeli airstrike.

The baby was born at 30 weeks gestation weighing 1.4 kilograms and had "severe respiratory distress," Mohamed Salama, one of the doctors caring for her, said at the time.

"This child should have been in her mother's womb at this time, but she was deprived of that right," the doctor said.

The baby was due to be raised by her maternal grandmother, Mirvat al-Sakani.

At least 34,200 people have been killed and more than 77,000 injured in the war that Israel launched in the Gaza Strip on October 7, in retaliation for the attack on the same day perpetrated by the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas in Israeli territory, which killed 1,163 people, mostly civilians, and 250 hostages, about 130 of whom remain in captivity and 34 have since died, according to the latest report by the Israeli authorities.

The conflict, which has been going on for more than six months, has also displaced almost two million people, plunging the overcrowded and impoverished Palestinian enclave into a serious humanitarian crisis, with more than 1.1 million people in a "catastrophic hunger situation" that is claiming victims - "the highest number ever recorded" by the UN in food security studies worldwide.
