The gas transfer between the two countries has resumed normally today, Gasgrid stressed in a statement.

On the first day after its reopening, 60 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of gas should be transported, equivalent to 70% of its maximum daily capacity, the company added.

Although the operator did not disclose the cost of the repair, Finnish television YLE reported that it is close to 40 million euros.

The Balticconnector gas pipeline, inaugurated in 2020, suffered a mysterious leak on October 8 that forced the gas flow between Finland and Estonia to be cut off, after a sudden drop in pressure was detected.

A few days later, the Finnish authorities detected the exact point of the leak and confirmed that it was due to a burst pipe, which is why they suspected that it was sabotage similar to that suffered by the Nord Stream gas pipeline a year earlier.

After carrying out an expert assessment with underwater equipment, the authorities photographed some clearly visible marks on the seabed and found a large damaged anchor, so they ruled out that it was an explosion.

The Finnish National Bureau of Investigation (KRP) concluded that the break was probably caused by the anchor of the Chinese ship Newnew Polar Bear, although it has not yet been possible to determine whether it was an accident or sabotage.

The ship in question, which was sailing under the Hong Kong flag, was in the vicinity of the gas pipeline at the time of the rupture and later docked in the Russian port of St. Petersburg without an anchor.

The Finnish and Estonian authorities have always maintained close cooperation to clarify what happened and have also requested the collaboration of the Chinese government, although to date there has been no progress in the investigation.
