"If they take any action, it will be registered as a shameful act in the history of Europe", said the Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman, Naser Kanani, at a press conference in Tehran on the possible sanctions against his country.

The foreign and defense ministers of the European Union (EU) are meeting in Luxembourg today to try to reach a political agreement that will allow for the expansion of sanctions against Iran.

The debate was scheduled following Iran's recent attack on Israel and after the initial intention expressed at an extraordinary meeting on the situation in the Middle East last week.

The aim is to sanction Iranian missiles and extend restrictive measures against Iranian individuals and entities responsible for the transfer of drones, a European official said in the run-up to the meeting.

If Tehran is sanctioned, "it will be a reward for the aggressor regime and an illegal action against a government that has only acted within the framework of the laws to create deterrence," the Iranian spokesman said.

Kananí was referring to the April 1 bombing of the Iranian consulate in Damascus, in which seven members of the Revolutionary Guard were killed, and the retaliatory attack with hundreds of missiles and drones against Israel, which caused no damage.

"It is interesting to note that the European Union has not adopted any sanctions against the regime that committed crimes and massacred the Palestinian people, executed the sick and wounded inside a hospital and used the hospital complex as a mass grave, but speaks of sanctions against a government that acted within the framework of international law," he stressed.

At today's meeting in Luxembourg, the EU foreign and defense ministers will also discuss the possibility of sanctioning the production of ballistic missiles, with the EU still reluctant to do so because it has not yet found evidence that Iran is supplying them to Russia.

The extension of sanctions against Iran, following the attacks on Israel, is based on Tehran's support for the Russian invasion of Ukraine and aims to appease tensions and prevent a regional escalation of the conflict, according to Brussels.
