Climate Change and Energy Minister Chris Bowen said the auction includes an agreement with the state of New South Wales, the country's most populous state and home to Sydney, to generate 2.2 gigawatts of power and supply one million homes.
The auction will also include another 300 megawatts for the South Australian state government, among other projects.
"We are getting on with delivering practical solutions that will keep the lights on in homes and businesses using the cheapest form of new energy - reliable renewable energy," Bowen said in a statement.
The announcement is part of a national plan to drive investment in clean energy generation, announced in November, the statement said.
The Labor government of Prime Minister Anthony Albanese wants to develop enough new clean energy to power 32 gigawatts of new capacity by 2030, representing 82% of forecast electricity consumption.
Australia - one of the world's largest polluters on a per capita basis when including its fossil fuel exports - has committed to cutting emissions by 43% by 2030, compared with 2005 levels, and to reaching net zero by 2050.
