UN demands probe into death in prison of Libyan political activist

The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) demanded today that the authorities in eastern Libya investigate in a "transparent and independent" manner the death of political activist Siraj Dughman, who was detained in October 2023 without trial.

According to the Efe agency, the UN mission said it had taken note of the Internal Security Agency, which indicated that the death occurred during "an escape attempt" due to a fall "from a great height through a window", while demanding the release of all arbitrarily detained persons.

The incident took place in a military detention center in the town of Rajma, near Benghazi, in eastern Libyan territory, controlled by Marshal Khalifa Haftar and the executive parallel to the Government of National Unity of Tripoli, the only one officially recognized.

Dughman was detained "arbitrarily" along with former Canadian ambassador Fathi Baja, Tarek al Bishari, Salem Laribi and Nasser Daessi: "they were never formally charged or brought before the court", the UN mission points out.

According to the local press, the detainees spoke at a seminar organized by the Center for Strategic and Future Studies on the consequences of the collapse of the Derna dams, during the September 2023 cyclone that caused the death of more than 4,500 people and the disappearance of 8,500.

"UNSMIL calls for the immediate and unconditional release of all persons arbitrarily detained, including those detained with Dughman," the UN representation said in the note.

The UN mission "reiterates its call for accountability and an end to kidnappings, disappearances and arbitrary detentions throughout the country".
