"A sticky bomb blast ripped through a minibus in the Kabul neighborhood of Kot-e-Sangi, killing the driver and wounding three other civilians," police spokesman Khalid Zadran said.

Police cordoned off the area and launched an investigation, he added in a statement cited by the French news agency AFP.

The Islamic State group's local affiliate, known as IS-K, swiftly claimed the attack on social media, saying it had "killed and wounded about ten" people in the bombing of "a minibus carrying employees of the Taliban government passing through a Taliban checkpoint".

The commercial area of Kot-e-Sangi is mainly inhabited by Shiite Hazaras, a community regularly targeted by the Sunni IS group, which considers them heretics.

While security has broadly improved in Afghanistan since the Taliban returned to power in August 2021, hundreds of people have been killed or wounded in attacks, often targeting civilians.

Most of these attacks have been claimed by IS, also known by its Arabic acronym Daesh.

A month ago, the group claimed a suicide bombing in the heart of the Taliban's southern Kandahar stronghold, at the entrance to a bank packed with civil servants and Taliban fighters who had gone to collect their salaries.

Officials said three people died in the suicide blast, but a hospital source told AFP the toll was much higher, at around 20 dead.

Experts say the Taliban authorities often downplay the number of casualties in such attacks, which they quickly seal off to clean up.
