Diet influences the risk of developing dementia or cancer even more than you think. Published in the Daily Express, an article attributes more benefits to two superfoods: dark green leafy vegetables, such as spinach and lettuce, and nuts.

As the newspaper explains, a group of nutritionists from Rush University in Chicago, United States, found that daily consumption of a daily portion of dark green leafy vegetables has been shown to be effective in reducing age-related cognitive decline in humans. More: last year, a study supported by the World Cancer Research Fund, involving more than 70,000 people, showed that a daily dose of these foods could help reduce the risk of bowel cancer by up to 7%. On the side of the Edith Cowan University in Australia, a group of scientists concluded that a daily portion of dark green leafy vegetables helped "significantly reduce the risk of blood pressure and cardiovascular disease". The study involved almost three thousand volunteers.

These foods are rich in nutrients considered essential, including vitamin K, lutein and folate. They also contain plant flavonoids, which are associated with improved cognitive function.

They are also a source of nitrates, compounds that are converted by the body into nitrites, which relax and widen blood vessels to increase blood flow to the heart, brain and muscles.

As for nuts, scientists from Imperial College London and the Norwegian University of Science and Technology revealed that those who consume these nuts are reducing their risk of heart disease, cancer and premature death by about 30%, 15% and 22%, respectively.

Published in the journal BMC Medicine, the analysis of 29 studies conducted worldwide revealed that daily consumption of nuts reduces the risk of death from respiratory diseases by half and by almost 40% from diabetes.

Consuming nuts also has other benefits. A study published in the British Journal of Cancer, involving 47,000 men, revealed that those who consumed a third of a cup of nuts five times a week had a 34% lower risk of prostate cancer mortality.
