Are you planning to attend the 2026 World Cup, which will be jointly hosted by the United States, Mexico and Canada? It may already be too late, according to a report Friday by The Athletic.

With 777 days to go before the tournament officially kicks off, wait times for visitor visas are already more than 800 days in Mexico City. In Bogota, Colombia, the average wait is 685 days.

The situation is causing particular concern in the United States, where cities such as New York — which will host the July 19 final — have expressed worry about the impact on tourism.

The Athletic reported that the issue has become so significant that it was the subject of a recent White House meeting, where strategies were discussed to try to drastically reduce wait times.

However, Travis Murphy, founder of Jetr Global Sports + Entertainment and a former U.S. diplomat who worked with the NBA, offered a stark warning: “My concern is this is going to be a disaster.”

“The concerns are absolutely there at the city level,” Murphy said. “The cities are thinking, ‘This is FIFA. They’ve got this.’ But when you look at how FIFA has operated with Qatar and Russia, it doesn’t necessarily translate to the United States.

“We’re a completely different animal in terms of how our government operates and how we communicate. And frankly, the emphasis that we put on soccer in this country.”
