Defending champions FC Barcelona suffered their first defeat of the season today, in their 38th game, losing at home to Chelsea 1-0 in the first leg of the semi-finals of the Women's Champions League.

A goal from the English captain, the Scottish Erin Cuthbert, in the 40th minute, after good work in the area from the German Sjoeke Nusken, sealed the triumph of the Londoners.

The Catalan team had more time on the ball and created more and better chances, but showed zero effectiveness, trying to score until the last moment and, in the 90+10 minute, Alexis Putellas still had an excellent chance.

Chelsea managed, however, to keep their goal at 'zero', something that no team had achieved in 2023/24 against 'Barça', and go into the second leg, scheduled for a week from now, at Stamford Bridge, with an advantage.

The Catalan team is looking for their third title, after the victories in 2020/21 and 2022/23, and their fifth final in the last six years -- they only failed in 2019/20 -- while Chelsea have only been in the final once, in 2021, when they were thrashed 4-0 by the Catalans.

The second match of the first leg of the semi-finals takes place today, with the French team Lyon, 'executioners' of Benfica in the 'quarters' and record holders of victories in the competition (eight), hosting their compatriots from Paris Saint-Germain, finalists defeated in 2014/15 and 2016/17.
