The NBA announced, in a statement released through official platforms at the end of Wednesday afternoon, that it has banned Jontay Porter forever, as a result of his alleged involvement in betting schemes.

The Toronto Raptors player is suspected of having sent confidential information to bettors and limited his involvement in certain matches, so that they could 'fill their pockets'. In addition, he is said to have invested money in games himself, something that is prohibited by the regulations.

It all started with an investigation opened earlier this year, when he entered and left, a few minutes later, claiming that he was sick, which allowed a bettor to pocket $1.1 million (one million euros) with a bet of $80,000 (75.1 thousand euros).

Due to the unusual volume of money, the bet was eventually blocked, and was never paid. On another occasion, the 24-year-old athlete is said to have revealed details of his own health to a bettor, before a game.

"There is nothing more important than protecting the integrity of the NBA competition for our fans, teams and everyone associated with our sport, which is why Jontay Porter's blatant violations of the regulations deserve the harshest punishment," said commissioner Adam Silver.
