Naby Keita has been suspended from Werder Bremen's first-team squad until the end of the season after refusing to travel to Leverkusen on Sunday after learning that he would not start in the Bundesliga match on Tuesday. The 29-year-old midfielder is thus prevented from training and being present in the dressing room, and has also been fined.
"Naby's behavior cannot be tolerated by us as a club. With this attitude, he let his team down in a sporting situation and put his personal interests above the team's. We cannot allow this. At this stage of the season, we need full concentration on the remaining matches and a very close-knit team. Therefore, there was no alternative," explained Clemens Fritz, Werder Bremen's sporting director, in statements to Werder Bremen's official channels.
It is recalled that Naby Keita, who arrived in Bremen last summer after his contract with Liverpool ended, refused to board the team bus after learning that he had been left out of the starting line-up to face Bayer Leverkusen, preferring to go... home.
