Declared dead, former Sporting de Braga is hospitalized... in serious condition

Rainford Kalaba is a name that may not mean much to you, but the truth is that the 37-year-old footballer has a long connection to national football. But it is not because of that time in Portugal that the player is involved in a situation that is, at the very least, unusual.
Kalaba, who spent time in Portugal in 2008/09 wearing the jerseys of Gil Vicente, Sporting de Braga and União de Leiria, was the victim of a serious traffic accident this Saturday, during a trip between Kafwe and Lusaka, in his country, Zambia.
The first information revealed by the local press reported that the athlete had not survived the violence of the crash, but, in an unusual turn of events, TP Mazembe, a club from the Democratic Republic of Congo that he represented for the last 13 years, clarified that the player arrived at the hospital alive and is between life and death.

In a statement published on social media, the Congolese team explained that they received the information that the emergency teams declared Kalaba dead at the scene. However, the 37-year-old footballer was transported to the hospital in Kigali, where he is in an induced coma and critical condition.

Rainford Kalaba, who also played for Nice in Europe, is the main figure in Zambian football. He has 100 international caps and helped win the CAN in 2012.
