"At this moment, I'm not able to train at all. That's why we decided that I will not start in the Giro d'Italia. It's a pity and I'm disappointed to also miss my second big goal of the season", Van Aert said in a post on social media today.

After missing the Tour of Flanders and Paris-Roubaix in March due to a crash in the E3 Saxo Bank Classic, which resulted in successful surgery for multiple fractures, the cyclist reveals that he is recovering "quite well" from some of the injuries.

Others, he says, are taking longer, such as "the ribs, which are still a limitation".

"Wout van Aert underwent a successful operation today. Examinations revealed that he fractured his sternum, collarbone and several ribs", detailed Visma-Lease a Bike on March 28.

The 29-year-old Belgian was involved in a violent crash that occurred 67 kilometers from the end of the E3 Saxo Bank Classic and was visibly battered: his equipment was completely torn in the back area, covered with abrasions, and he even had to be removed on a stretcher to be transported to the hospital, while crying disconsolately.

A classicist par excellence and one of the elements of the 'Big 6' of cycling, the Belgian had planned to make his debut in the Giro d'Italia, which will take place between May 04 and 26.
