The possibility of creating a space station on the Moon poses some logistical challenges to agencies such as NASA, which is why infrastructures such as the Flexible Levitation on a Track (FLOAT) system are being considered.
This project, currently being evaluated by NASA, aims to build a floating railway line on the surface of the Moon that would provide “reliable, autonomous and efficient transportation of goods” on our natural satellite. Naturally, this system would be crucial in the daily operations of astronauts living on a station on the Moon.
The project is described on NASA's official website, which indicates that the railway line would use “magnetic robots” that would be able to transport more than 100 tons of cargo over “multiple kilometers per day”.
Naturally, it is not known whether this FLOAT project will become a reality, but given that NASA intends to take astronauts to the surface of the Moon in 2026, it is likely that we will have news about future projects in the coming years.
