Bordalo II covers Salazar's campaign with "antifascist" medicine box

The artist's most recent installation was placed in the Vimieiro cemetery, in Santa Comba Dão, where the Portuguese dictator is buried. The action marks the 50th anniversary of the April 25 Revolution.

Portuguese artist Bordallo II covered the grave of António Oliveira Salazar in the cemetery of the parish of Vimieiro, in Santa Comba Dão, with a giant "antifascist" medicine box.

"Freedom", as Bordallo II calls the medicine, is a "25mg" "antifascist probiotic" with "50 capsules", in reference to the April 25 Revolution and the 50 Chega deputies elected by the Portuguese on March 10, who are now part of the Assembly of the Republic.

"For some reason, those who have tyrannical and anti-democratic ambitions start by attacking freedom - this complex concept that crosses various fields of our life and without which we will not have a just society. Freedom is fundamental for each of us and for the well-being of all", the artist begins by writing in a publication shared on his Instragram account, on Tuesday morning, adding that "we cannot be distracted and take freedom for granted".

"On the contrary, we have to defend it and exercise it every day. April 25 also serves to remind us of this! Defending freedom is respecting differences, demanding universal fundamental rights and allowing the expression of free thought and creativity. Art must also be free, it must be able to question, provoke and provide a starting point for reflection", he stresses before ending with a "April 25 FOREVER, fascism never again".

On Monday, April 22, the artist had already revealed some images of an installation in the municipality of Mealhada also alluding to the Carnation Revolution.

On the facade of the building in question, Bordallo II made a giant woodpecker on one side and on the other placed a poster with a photo of the same 'remedy' that covers Salazar's grave in the Vimieiro cemetery.

It is worth recalling that, recently, Bordallo II had placed an installation in front of the Parliament criticizing "intolerant" and "oppressive" politicians.
