A tourist has been fined 12,500 Norwegian kroner (around £1,060) for getting too close to a walrus in the Svalbard archipelago in Norway. Officials said the man went onto an ice floe on Wednesday and "disturbed" the animal as it was lying down.

According to Sky News, several people who said they saw the man approaching the mammal reported him to the local governor. "Parts of the incident were also observed by the governor's staff," the broadcaster reports.

It is an offence in Svalbard to behave in a way that disturbs wildlife without a necessary reason. The tourist was taken to the governor's office where he agreed to pay the fine.

"The governor encourages everyone to keep a good distance to walruses so that they are not disturbed and so that no dangerous situations arise for people," the governor's office said in a statement.
