British military could deliver aid on the ground in Gaza
UK troops could be in charge of delivering aid on the ground in Gaza, with the help of a sea jetty that is being built, the BBC reported today.

The British broadcaster said the US recently indicated that military personnel from "a third country" – possibly British, the BBC said – would deliver the aid, which is being shipped from Cyprus and transferred to land via a temporary jetty that has been under construction since March.
While the UK government has not confirmed the story, the BBC said the UK's Ministry of Defence was considering putting boots on the ground, which would mark a significant escalation in the level of British military involvement.
The possible role for British forces would involve driving the aid lorries as they are unloaded from the jetty and delivering them to a secure distribution point in Gaza, the broadcaster said.
The aid would arrive in Cyprus on large ships and would then be transferred to smaller landing craft and trucks.
The aim, the broadcaster said, is to supplement, rather than replace, the delivery of aid by land, which has so far been inadequate.
The UK's Ministry of Defence also said on Friday that the Royal Fleet Auxiliary ship RFA Cardigan Bay had sailed from Cyprus to support the US-led construction of the temporary jetty.
The ship will provide accommodation for hundreds of US sailors and marines, who Washington has said will not set "one foot" on Gazan territory.
Israel went to war with the Islamist group Hamas after the Palestinian group began firing rockets into Israel on 7 July, killing three civilians and wounding dozens more.
More than 1,200 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza since the start of the war, according to Hamas, and more than 240 Israelis.
