A six-year-old girl had the wrong leg operated on Thursday at a hospital in Campina Grande, Brazil. It was the child's mother who noticed the mistake. The girl has already returned to the operating room for a new surgical intervention, this time on the correct limb.
The minor was transferred to the emergency care unit as soon as she entered the Campina Grande University Hospital. According to G1, the girl had an infectious cellulitis on her left leg and had to undergo an operation.
After undergoing the intervention, the girl's mother realized that her daughter had been operated on her right leg, when the problem was actually on the left. After the error, the hospital issued a statement confirming the removal of the entire team that accompanied the girl. An investigation will also be opened into the case.
An aunt of the patient, Cristina Costa, revealed that the girl had been sick for at least three months. The woman also stressed that the pain in her leg led the girl to be hospitalized for more than two months.
"It is unimaginable the suffering for the family and for this child. A feeling of total helplessness, a feeling of total disbelief with the care", vented the aunt who also questioned the quality of the service offered to patients.
