The armed forces said the aircraft was carrying five soldiers and three employees of the Risk Management Secretariat, as well as humanitarian aid for flood-hit areas of Pastaza province.

In a statement, the army added that the helicopter, which was flying between the city of Shell and the community of Tiwino, is believed to have crashed at 09:36 (14:36 in Lisbon).

The armed forces launched a search operation, involving two light helicopters, which located the wreckage of the aircraft almost five hours after the crash.

Weather conditions prevented the bodies from being recovered on Friday and the operation will continue today, the army added, which has already ordered an investigation into the cause of the accident.

"We, as soldiers, stand in solidarity with the families of our five brave soldiers who served their country with total dedication and professionalism, despite the risk that the military profession represents, and with three exemplary Ecuadorian citizens," said the armed forces, which pledged to provide the necessary assistance.

Even before the bodies were discovered, Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa expressed his regret on social network X (formerly Twitter) for "the tragic accident suffered by soldiers and public employees who were providing humanitarian aid in the Tiwino region".
