"A Lebanese cadre of the Jamaa Islamiya was killed by an Israeli drone strike that targeted his car" on the Meidoun road, the source told AFP on condition of anonymity.
The official National News Agency (NNA) reported two dead in an "enemy" strike on the Meidoun road. The strike comes as violence has escalated between the Iran-backed Lebanese Shiite group Hezbollah and Israel. The area is in the southern Bekaa Valley, a Hezbollah stronghold, far from the border with Israel. The Jamaa Islamiya militant group is closely linked to Hamas, with which it says it carries out attacks on Israel from southern Lebanon. On March 24, a leader of the group survived an Israeli drone strike targeting him in eastern Lebanon, while a Syrian civilian was killed, according to a Lebanese security source. Since the start of a war on October 7 between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip, there has been cross-border fire between Hezbollah and Israeli forces in the area around the Lebanon-Israel border. The Israeli military said Thursday that an Israeli civilian was killed overnight near the border by rockets fired from southern Lebanon, where it said it had destroyed a Hezbollah infrastructure. The violence between Hezbollah and Israel has killed at least 381 people on the Lebanese side since October 7, mostly Hezbollah fighters, according to an AFP tally. In northern Israel, 11 soldiers and eight civilians have been killed, according to the army.
