The United States will “provide additional significant military assistance at a rapid pace to meet Ukraine’s urgent battlefield and air defense needs,” according to a White House readout of the call between the two leaders. In turn, Zelensky expressed, according to a message he posted on the Telegram network, his gratitude to Biden “for his unwavering support of Ukraine and his true global leadership.” The Ukrainian president also said that he had received assurances from his US counterpart that the new aid package would be “swift and powerful and will strengthen Ukraine’s air defense, long-range, and artillery capabilities.” According to the White House, Joe Biden also spoke with the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, and the two agreed that it was vital to continue supporting Ukraine. The European bloc indicated today that it would continue to provide assistance to Kyiv, but without announcing any concrete measures, at a time when the Ukrainians are demanding anti-aircraft defense batteries in particular. The lower house of the US Congress, with a Republican majority, adopted on Saturday a gigantic security spending program, demanded for months by Biden and eagerly awaited by Ukraine. The Ukrainian army is facing a shortage of new recruits and ammunition, which is weakening it in the face of constant pressure from Russian troops in the east of the country. The new aid package is expected to be approved on Tuesday by the Senate, which has a Democratic majority. Read Also: Kharkiv television tower destroyed after Russian attack (Portuguese version)
