"The [air] transport situation in Cabo Verde is chaotic and has greatly harmed the country. I believe it is essential that the competent authorities provide an explanation, considering the seriousness that jeopardizes not only the national economy, but also national security", stated José Maria Neves.

The Head of State believes it is necessary to clearly show society, citizens and companies a "definitive and sustainable solution".

"I am extremely concerned about what has been happening in recent days and it is time to put an end to this chaos, under penalty of irremediably harming the country. We cannot continue in this situation of having no connections between the islands, jeopardizing the country's cohesion, people's mobility and companies' productivity", he lamented.

The President of the Republic stressed that, due to the lack of connections between the islands, "there were problems" in holding the Cabo Verde Cup football matches and other "important events" are being affected.

"The Government has to act and tell the people of Cabo Verde what it is going to do, providing guarantees and restoring hope to the country", he reinforced.

Minutes before, at a press conference, the president of the African Party for the Independence of Cabo Verde (PAICV, opposition), Rui Semedo, said that "the Government has appeared at the arrival of the so-called partners, with parties, celebrations, but not at the moments of difficulties and departures".

"In these eight years, this is the third company to say goodbye to Cabo Verde, in worrying situations", he added, taking for granted Bestfly's departure from the archipelago.

"We are beginning to doubt whether it is the operators or the Government that has not been able to provide adequate responses", he said.

The Angolan airline Bestfly has the concession for inter-island flights, but suspended flights in early April, after months of service degradation due to lack of aircraft.

At the end of February, in view of the problems and complaints from the population, the state-owned company Transportes Aéreos de Cabo Verde (TACV), dedicated to international flights, rented planes and began operating between the islands in an attempt to minimize the problem, which has persisted.
