You may have come across a 'miracle' workout and diet plan that promises a toned tummy and a perfect 'six pack' in 30 days. The truth is, it may take you a bit longer.

“Depending on your current body weight, genetics, type of diet and exercise, losing excess body fat alone can take six months to two years or more, even with a strict diet and exercise routine,” psychotherapist Austin Ozzie Gontang tells USA Today.

“Men typically need to get to around 10 to 15 percent body fat and women need to get to around 15 to 20 percent body fat to see their abs,” he continues.

And it’s not just diet and exercise that plays a role. “Other lifestyle factors also play a key role in getting a toned stomach. This includes stress, quality of sleep and genetics,” says Austin Ozzie Gontang.
