Every woman experiences her period differently, and of course, not everyone reports the same symptoms. Because of this, "they may not always know when to seek help or if there's anything that can be done to improve their symptoms and quality of life," explains Megan Orlando, an ob-gyn, as quoted in Huffpost, a blog aggregator.

Four signs your period pain isn't normal:
- Irregular or very heavy bleeding. This could be a sign of several conditions, such as "fibroids, noncancerous growths in or on the uterus; adenomyosis, in which endometrial tissue grows into the muscle of the uterus; or endometrial polyps, growths made of endometrial tissue that form in the uterus." In rare cases, it could be a sign of uterine cancer.
- Pelvic pain that's debilitating. "When debilitating pain is cyclical — meaning it happens around the same time each month — it could be a sign of uterine fibroids or adenomyosis." Severe, sudden pain could be a sign of a medical emergency, "such as an ovarian torsion or an ectopic pregnancy."
- Pain during sex, bowel movements or urination. In very rare cases, this could be a sign of endometriosis, a condition in which endometrial tissue "can start to grow on your bladder or even your bowels and rectum." Of course, more often than not, "these symptoms are likely due to more common issues such as constipation, a urinary tract infection or, in the case of painful sex, muscle spasms or overly sensitive nerves."
